Syllabus Information

While there is no set template for LANG 120 syllabi, the Faculty Handbook lays out several required & recommend elements for your syllabus at https://www3.unca.edu/aa/handbook/5.htm#5.2.5, and the CTL maintains this Syllabus Guide for faculty. Here following are some important elements about LANG 120 specifically to share with students.

Language 120 Course Description

From the catalog (https://catalog.unca.edu/): Emphasizes writing as a tool of discovery and analysis; practice in active, critical reading; and attention to rhetorical situations and choices. It also introduces students to various discourse communities, modes, and conventions; research and information literacy skills; and the revision process. A grade of C- or better is required. LANG 120 must be completed within the first two semesters of enrollment at UNC Asheville. Fall and Spring.

Language 120 Student Learning Outcomes

At the completion of LANG 120, students will have developed writing processes to:

  1. Engage in critical inquiry and reflection: Discover and refine critical questions and problems and investigate them from multiple perspectives.
  2. Develop information literacy: Access, evaluate, and integrate relevant information from a variety of sources in an ethical manner.
  3. Communicate in rhetorically effective ways: Craft and revise written work marked by choices in focus, structure, and style appropriate for rhetorical purposes, audience expectations, and disciplinary conventions.

Writing Center Support | SAMPLE STATEMENT: The University Writing Center (UWC) supports writers in one-on-one sessions with student writing consultants. Consultants work with writers at all stages of the writing process from deciphering prompts and organizing ideas, to documenting sources and revising prose.
