UNCA’s Media design Lab (located in the basement of Ramsey Library) is an amazing resource for LANG 120 instructors and students who are interested in exploring communication through a variety of media platforms. Check out their online resources, bring your classes for a brief orientation, or schedule working class sessions in the MDL. To set up a time, contact the lab manager, Laurel Buffaloe, at lbuffalo@unca.edu or 828.250.3951. For their regular hours, see https://library.unca.edu/mdl/hours
from their website:
The Media Design Lab is an interactive learning space where students, faculty and staff from all academic departments come to create images, videos, printed designs, presentations, sound, websites and more. No experience is needed since lab assistants are available to help you through the process.
In addition to a wide range of multimedia software, the lab includes a scanner, headphones, drawing tablets and memory card readers. Equipment is also available for format transfers, duplications, and closed captioning video content.
The TV Studio next door includes cameras, various sets, and a wall-to-floor green screen. You can also record in the Audio Lab. In both spaces, previous experience is not required since technicians operate the equipment for you, and use is limited to course assignments only. On the other hand, the self service Audio Recording Studio is available for personal projects as well.
You can also check out cameras, tripods, and microphones at the library circulation desk. If you need help using equipment or with editing your video, drop by the Media Design Lab and we can show you how.
The lab also now offers a self-service Video Recording Studio. Students don’t need to reserve these spaces but if they want to guarantee a spot, they can either email Laurel (lbuffalo@unca.edu) or Kevin, the evening assistant (kwatson1@unca.edu).
